Combining the noisy swells of the Jesus and Mary Chain with melodic elements of '50s rock & roll, Danish duo the Raveonettes are a band tied to the past, sonically and visually, but they're never afraid to give their trademark retro sound a slightly more modern update with new wave synths and hip-hop drum breaks while always staying true to their darkly dangerous vision.
Guitarist Sune Rose Wagner had tried assembling a band for several years, traveling between New York
City, Las Vegas, Hollywood, and an island outside of Seattle in his search for like-minded musicians. A longtime fan of Bob Dylan, he also prized the songwriting of Buddy Holly and the harmonies of the Everly Brothers, although it was the lovely dissonance of Sonic Youth and the Jesus and Mary Chain that ultimately motivated Wagner to pursue music professionally.
His stay in America didn't exactly pan out, and Wagner returned to Denmark, where he connected with bassist/vocalist Sharin Foo. A fan of the Beatles and the Velvet Underground, Foo had studied qawwali and Hindustani classical music during a six-month stay abroad.

The Raveonettes' third album, Lust Lust Lust, is the sound of a band rescuing its career from the clutches of cliché and rediscovering the magic that made it so exciting on its debut, Chain Gang of Love. The opening track, "Aly, Walk with Me," serves notice that things are going to be a lot different, the menacing prowl of the verses giving way to a deafening burst of white light/white heat noise halfway through the song.
Those fearing that Lust Lust Lust would be another record lost to over-production and slickness should, once they regain their hearing, be ecstatic. The duo recaptures the fire, mystery, and dirty glamour of its early records and adds a sharper melodic sense on a batch of songs that will stick to you like a sharp knife between the ribs.
Tracks like the thrillingly bleak yet devastatingly pretty "Dead Sound," the swaying "The Beat Dies," and the classically melodic "Black Satin" are as good as anything the band has done to date (and frankly, compare quite ably to the work of their most obvious influence, the Jesus and Mary Chain).
Sune Rose Wagner took over the production task from Richard Gottherer and stripped away all
remnants of the glossy hack job they did on Pretty in Black. Throughout the record, the reverb is so heavy it might make you woozy, the drums clatter like trash can lids, and the vocals struggle to make it through the layers of haze, but Wagner's light touch and newfound sense of restraint means the arrangements sound fully realized and, if not three-dimensional, a very strong two. Sharin Foo's vocals sounds as glacial and, as ever, Wagner's guitar melodies are note perfect (check his work on "Blitzed" for a short lesson on how to do a lot with only a few notes) and the two of them appear as reassuringly unwholesome as ever.]

IN AND OUT OF CONTROL 2009
The Raveonettes fourth album, In and Out of Control, marks another change in direction for the band,
though it's much less noticeable than the shift between the glossy, overproduced Pretty in Black and the raw, noisy, and self-produced Lust Lust Lust. This time out, the duo of Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner decided to record in a studio again, and enlisted the production and songwriting skills of Thomas Troelsen, who's worked with a diverse roster of artists that ranges from Junior Senior to Aqua, to his own excellent groups Private and Superheroes.
Anyone fearing a return to the slick sounds that almost ruined the band will be glad to know that while there is more variety and a definite pop feel to the album, there is also plenty of noise and raw power to go around. The subject matter of the lyrics is totally Raveonettes too, touching on "suicide," rape, sadistic girls, heartbreak -- all providing the requisite levels of general malevolence one would expect.
What the band and Troelsen do on the album is take the basic noise-plus-melody template that forms
the band's core and give it a tweak here and there. Some sunny glockenspiel on "Last Dance," some electronic sound manipulation on "Boys Who Rape (Should All Be Destroyed"), and clunky new wave drums on "Breaking into Cars" are some of the touches that brighten things up without diluting the band's intrinsic strengths.
In general, the tightly arranged songs and use of different sounds from song to song make it
perhaps the most listenable album of their career. It has some of their hookiest songs ("Last Dance," "Suicide," "Bang!"), some of their most ferocious sounding songs ("Break Up Girls!") and their toughest ("Boys Who Rape"), a couple of very pretty ballads ("Oh, I Buried You Today" and "Wine"), and no missteps. Thanks to the production, the performances, and the songs, the Raveonettes have delivered on the renewed promise of Lust Lust Lust and made a very good, almost great, noise-pop album.
