THE BAD SEEDS

                         

The Bad Seeds were an American garage rock band formed in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1964. Musically influenced by traditional blues and the raw recordings by the Rolling Stones, the group's sound was marked by primal proto-punk instrumental arrangements and vocals. The band released three singles, mostly originals penned by guitarist Mike Taylor, that have since become classics of garage rock, and have the Bad Seeds considered forerunners in popularizing the subgenre in Texas.
To celebrate their success, the group jump-started a tour highlighted by a battle of the bands at Corpus

Christi's Carousel Lounge. However, to the crowd's surprise, the Bad Seeds only managed to reach second place after being ousted by up and coming band the Zakary Thaks. Though the Bad Seeds continued to perform, the defeat was seen as a symbolic passing of the torch for top musical act in the region.[6] After the group disbanded in late 1966, Taylor produced and managed for the Zakary Thaks, and recorded under the moniker the Fabulous Michael. Prince went on to help form the psychedelic rock band Bubble Puppy. The Bads Seeds' material has become well-circulated on compilation albums, most prominently A Battle of the Bands and Revolution! Teen Time in Corpus Christi which both contain all of their released material
The Bad Seeds should not be mistaken for another Texan group of the same name formed in Kilgore College, in 1966.

THE LIBERTY BELL

                         

The Liberty Bell was an American garage rock/psychedelic rock band from Corpus Christi, Texas who were active in the 1960s. They specialized in a blues-based brand of proto-punk influenced by British groups such as the Yardbirds. The band failed to reach wider audience in the time, but have come to the attention of garage rock collectors and enthusiasts in the intervening years since their breakup, with their work appearing on several compilations. The band signed with Carl Becker, owner of the J-Beck and Cee-Bee record labels, to manage them. The band was in need of a lead singer, so Becker enlisted the services of Ronnie Tanner who had sung with another local band the Acoustics. With Tanner now in the fold, they went into the recording studio and in a cluster of several sessions, they recorded all of the

output that would be featured on their 1967 Cee-Bee releases. Their debut single, taken from these sessions in McAllen, Texas, was a cover of the Yardbirds' "Nazz Are Blue" b/w Willie Dixon's "Big Boss Man" and was released in May. Their next two 1967 releases were "That's How it Will Be" b/w "For What You Lack" which appeared in July, followed by "Something for Me" b/w "Al's Blues" released in October. The band also cut an acetate of "I Can See" taken from these same sessions. In early 1968 Ronnie Tanner left the group to fight in Vietnam and was replaced by Chris Gerniottis, formerly in the Zakary Thaks, who brought along several songs with him which displayed lyrics of a more contemplative nature which aptly suited their increasing forays into psychedelia. In more recent years the Liberty Bell's work has come to the attention of garage rock and psychedelic collectors and enthusiasts.

THE ZAKARY THAKS

                       

The Zakary Thaks were an American garage rock band from Corpus Christi, Texas, United States, which formed in the mid-1960s. Influenced by blues guitarists as well as British and American groups

of the period, the band soon gained local popularity. Their first record, for the local J-Beck label, combined an original composition, "Bad Girl", with a Kinks song, "I Need You". Released in mid-1966, it became a regional hit and was picked up nationally by Mercury Records. Its success won the band a spot supporting their heroes The Yardbirds. A second single, "Face To Face", was less successful, but the band continued to tour, supporting acts including Jefferson Airplane and the 13th Floor Elevators.

Later singles showed the band taking a more pop-focused approach. By 1968, Gerniottis had left the band for a while to join another group, the Liberty Bell, but returned later. However, the band did not repeat its early success, splitting up in the early 1970s. Drummer Stan Moore died in 2000. In 2004 and 2005, remaining members of the band reformed to perform at festivals. Bassist Rex Gregory died on January 18, 2008. Lead guitarist John Lopez died on February 23, 2022.

KUBLA KHAN

                            

Kubla Khan was an offshoot of the Zakary Thaks and the Liberty Bell, a pair of '60s-era Corpus Christi, TX-based garage bands. Although shorter-lived than either of its predecessors, Kubla Khan's music is just as worthy of being heard as it featured the voice and songwriting of Chris Gerniottis. By all accounts, Gerniottis was one of the most powerful vocalists ever to come out of Corpus Christi, and his songwriting was flexible enough to move within a multitude of idioms, from the psychedelia of the Zakary Thaks to the more basic hard rock of Kubla Khan. In addition to Gerniottis on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, the other members of the group were Jeff Burke on lead guitar, Mike Gregory on organ, Tom Engle on bass, and Mike Gersmann on drums. The group's goal was to lay down the equivalent of an album's worth of properly worked-out and finely honed material and take their career from there. Unfortunately, the hoped-for gigs never materialized, and the band broke up after only one official single release and a year of work. The reason for their failure isn't obvious, based on the songs they left behind, which were several cuts above what any local band was capable of producing. "Bossa Nova" could have been an outtake from one of Santana's early albums, while "Revolution" could have been a collaboration of the Who and Creedence Clearwater Revival, and "Give It Up" is a superb piece of white soul. Although mostly remembered today for their connection to the Zakary Thaks, Kubla Khan make a fascinating lost chapter in the history of Texas garage bands.
