Green Day: Kerplunk! 1991 + Dookie 1994 + Insomniac 1995 + American idiot 2004

Since the early '90s, Bay Area trio Green Day has been one of the most celebrated and successful bands

in the world, growing from an energetic and snarling pop-punk group into an increasingly melodic and stylistically adventurous act and infiltrating the mainstream early in the process. From the start, the band took notes from the anarchic attitudes and loud, fast, snotty approach of jittery late-'70s punk acts like the Jam and Sham 69, but elevated their blasting sound with pop elements like catchy hooks, tightly arranged song structures, and Beatlesque vocal harmonies.

Formed in 1987, by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist and backing vocalist

Mike Dirnt, with drummer Tré Cool, they were originally called Sweet Children, but changed their name before their first release. The band's early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records, including their first album, 39/Smooth (1990). For most of the band's career, they have been a power trio with Cool, who replaced John Kiffmeyer in 1990 before the recording of the band's second studio album, Kerplunk (1991).

Throughout the early '90s, Green Day continued to attract a cult following, which only gained strength with the release of their second album, 1992's Kerplunk. The underground success of Kerplunk led to a

wave of interest from major record labels, and the band eventually decided to sign with Reprise. Dookie, Green Day's major-label debut, was released in the spring of 1994. Thanks to MTV's support of the initial single "Longview," Dookie became a major hit. The album continued to gain momentum throughout the summer, with its second single, "Basket Case," spending five weeks on top of the American modern rock charts. At the end of the summer, the band stole the show at Woodstock '94, which increased the sales of Dookie.

Though the albums Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997) and Warning (2000) did not match the success of

Dookie, they were still successful, with Insomniac and Nimrod reaching double platinum status, while Warning achieved gold. As they soldiered through the ensuing decades, Green Day matured without losing any of the lawless attitude they'd built their sound on, reaching a career peak with 2004's American Idiot (a sociopolitical rock opera and Grammy-winning international success).

2004's American Idiot, an aggressive rock opera that became a surprise success -- a chart-topper around the world, a multi-platinum Grammy winner, and easily the best-reviewed album of their career. Green

Day reveled in the album's success, hitting numerous award shows and performing as part of Live 8 in July 2005. That fall saw the release of Bullet in a Bible, a concert album that documented the trio's expansive Idiot live show. Over the years, Green Day expanded their sound to include nods to glam rock, soul, and larger-than-life arena rock, taking the time to make such detours as 2020's Father of All..., but they also found sustenance in their pop-punk, as indicated by 2024's rousing Saviors.

01.  GREEN DAY - KERPLUNK! 1991

Green Day's second full album was the perfect dry run for the band's later assault on the mainstream, containing both more variety and more flat-out smashes than previous releases had shown. With Tre Cool now firmly in place as the drummer, the lineup was at last settled, and it turned out Cool and Mike

Dirnt were a perfect rhythm section, with the former showing a bit more flash and ability than John Kiftmeyer did. Together the two throw in a variety of guitarless breaks that would later help to define the band's sound for many -- warm and never letting the beat go. As for Billie Joe Armstrong, his puppy-dog delivery and eternal switching between snotty humor and sudden sorrrow was better than ever, as were his instantly memorable riffs.

ONE OF MY LIES LYRICS

When I was younger, I thought that the world circled around me
But in time, I realized I was so wrong
My immortal thoughts turned into just dreams of a dead future
It was a tragic case of my reality, yeah

Do you think you're indestructible, and no one can touch you?
Well, I think you're disposable, and it's time you knew the truth

'Cause it's just one of my lies
Well, it's just one of my lies
And all I wanna do is get real high
Well, it's just one of my lies

Why does my life have to be so small, and death is forever?
And does forever have a life to call its own?
Don't give me an answer, 'cause you only know as much as I know
Unless you've been there once, well, I hardly think so

Do you think you're indestructible, and no one can touch you?
Well, I think you're disposable, and it's time you knew the truth

'Cause it's just one of my lies
Well, it's just one of my lies
And all I wanna do is get real high
Well, it's just one of my lies

I used to pray at night
Before I laid myself down
My mother said it was right
Her mother said it too
Why?

BURNOUT LYRICS

I declare I don't care no more

I'm burning up and out and growing bored
In my smoked out boring room
My hair is shagging in my eyes
Dragging my feet to hit the street tonight
Drive along these shit town lights

I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out
And I stepped in line to walk amongst the dead

Oh, apathy has rained on me
And now I'm feeling like a soggy dream
So close to drowning, but I don't mind
I'll live inside this mental cave
Throw my emotions in the grave
And hell, who needs them anyway?

I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out
And I stepped in line to walk amongst the dead
I'm not growing up, I'm just burning out
And I stepped in line to walk amongst the dead
Dead.

03.  GREEN DAY - INSOMNIAC 1995

The Berkeley pop-punks’ 1995 album Insomniac served as the band’s highly anticipated fourth release

overall and follow-up to their breakthrough major label debut Dookie from the year prior. With Insomniac the group took everything that was great about its predecessor, i.e. its simplicity, hooks, lack of pretension and disdain for authority, and upped the ante with darker motifs and heavier songs. It resulted in yet another quality collection of uncompromising punk rock with breakneck drumming, pounding bass, catchy riffs and snot-nosed vocals.

PANIC SONG LYRICS

Ready for a cheap escape
On the brink of self-destruction
Widespread panic

Broken glass inside my head
Bleeding down these thoughts of anguish
Mass confusion

Well, the world is a sick machine breeding a mass of shit
With such a desolate conclusion
Fill the void with... I don't care

There's a plague inside of me
Eating at my disposition
Nothing's left

Torn out of reality
Into a state of no opinion
Limp with hate

Well, the world is a sick machine breeding a mass of shit
With such a desolate conclusion
Fill the void with... I don't care

I wanna jump out
I wanna jump out
I wanna jump out
I wanna jump out

04.  GREEN DAY - AMERCAN IDIOT 2004

The story of St. Jimmy has an arc similar to Hüsker Dü's landmark punk-opera Zen Arcade, while the music has grandiose flourishes straight out of both Queen and Rocky Horror Picture Show (the '50s

pastiche "Rock and Roll Girlfriend" is punk rock Meat Loaf), all tied together with a nervy urgency and a political passion reminiscent of the Clash, or all the anti-Reagan American hardcore bands of the '80s. These are just the clearest touchstones for American Idiot, but reducing the album to its influences gives the inaccurate impression that this is no more than a patchwork quilt of familiar sounds, when it's an idiosyncratic, visionary work in its own right.

AMERICAN IDIOT LYRICS

Don't wanna be an American idiot
Don't want a nation under the new mania
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindfuck America

Welcome to a new kind of tension
All across the alienation
Where everything isn't meant to be okay
In television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
For that's enough to argue

Well, maybe I'm the faggot, America
I'm not a part of a redneck agenda
Now everybody, do the propaganda
And sing along to the age of paranoia

Welcome to a new kind of tension
All across the alienation
Where everything isn't meant to be okay
In television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
For that's enough to argue

Don't wanna be an American idiot
One nation controlled by the media
Information age of hysteria
It's calling out to idiot America

Welcome to a new kind of tension
All across the alienation
Where everything isn't meant to be okay
In television dreams of tomorrow
We're not the ones who're meant to follow
For that's enough to argue

Bread, Love And Dreams: Discography

Acid-folk act coming from Scotland, this time Edinburgh, BREAD LOVE AND DREAM was a trio

lead by Glaswegian David McNiven, joining in with a two-women act: Carolyn Davis on guitar and Angie Rew on flute and lead vocals.
They toured around Scotland for a while and started a loyal local following, but they sounded much influenced by another Scot act THE INCREDIBLE STRING BAND, which was not surprising since they ruled acid folk and it was not the first band inspired by ISB: indeed the Irish Dr STRANGELY STRANGE sounds much like BL&D.

Spotted by Decca staff Ray Horricks at the Edinburgh Festival in 68, they were brought down to

London by him to record their first album and it was released in early 69. This self-titled album contained some acid folk with some string arrangements, but the market being flooded by such albums, it sold poorly, enticing guitarist Carolyn Davis to quit. Their 1969 debut album, on Decca Records, included mainly self-penned material.

Decca wanted to cut the band from its roster, but Horricks held good and the group was grudgingly allowed a second chance. Aware of this BL&D first went on the road (sharing stages with MAGNA

CARTA and TYRANOSAURUS REX) and wrote new material for their upcoming album. It was during this time that BL&D developed a working project with the Traverse Theatre Group in Edinburgh. Their director Max Stafford wanted McNiven to adapt one of his pieces Mother Earth to the stage actors. It eventually became Amaryllis, given a twist of name. This piece was then performed in Edinburgh, then London, than on a European tour (Scandinavia, Benelux, France & Spain) to apparently great acclaim.

Strange Tales Of Captain Shannon was therefore released fall of 70 to critical acclaim, and it contained

the lengthy title track that was again in the ISB mould. As their second album failed to sell, Decca quickly released (botched-up marketing and too few copies pressed) in early 71, Amaryllis, which is arguably their best works, but it fail to sell, or even match the sales of the preceding two albums. Decca dropped the band after an Edinburgh's Royal Court Theatre's presentation and wrote the whole thing down as a tax write-off.

Rew and McNiven married, and the latter went on to write for the BBC comedy unit, as well as film

scores. Rew later ran a touring children’s theatre company called Hullaballoo, working as writer, composer, actor and director. In 1990 McNiven toured with Tracy Nelson. Davis became a full-time student of media studies.

Some of their songsare fragile, beautiful: like the wings on a butterfly. Although-again like the

butterfly-they impose little flash-points of colour upon the eneryday world surrounding them. Other songs they have written are soaked in the world'srealism, acutely abservant and disturbing as the dab of a styptic pencil.

This is their second album released, but it was recorded at the same time as Amaryllis, as the original

idea was to release a double album as their idols Incredible String Band had with WEE Tam & The Big Huge. But there was no way that their label would as they simply didn't believe in this group, only producer Horrick forcing the three albums deal to conclude.

BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS - AMARYLLIS 1971

Bread Love & Dreams recorded their most memorable album ‘Amaryllis’ for Decca at the same time

they put together ‘Strange Tale of Captain Shannon and the Hunchback from Gigha’, and with the same lineup that included Danny Thompson and Terry Cox of the Pentangle, but without the lovely voice of Carolyn Davis who had left after the group’s debut release. A hyper rare psych/folk album on the mighty Decca label, this is a beautiful piece of psych/folk music from the Golden Era.
