Baby Guru: Baby Guru 2011 + Pieces 2012 + Marginalia 2014

Baby Guru is a Greek band based in Athens. Their music traverses the wider spectre of rock, with heavy influences from genres such as krautrock and psychedelic rock, while the lyrics of their songs

are almost exclusively written in English. They have released three albums, two of which had an international distribution. The members of the band are King Elephant (Yannis Karras), Prins Obi (Yorgos Dimakis, initially under the name Obi Serotone), who is the singer and main lyricist of the band and Sir Kosmiche (Axios Zafirakos). The three childhood friends started playing music together during the last years of highschool under the name Art.

Baby Guru is an ever-evolving musical organism. Tired of the typical rock band thing, they lay emphasis

on spontaneity and unexpected inspiration, while they cultivate an obsession with the kraut rock legacy, pop melodies, psychedelic music and mama Africa percussion experiments. They remain incurably charmed by the analog warmth of proto-electronica and the raw power of garage punk, while they demonstrate a driving perspective of instinctive grooves and vocal lines that range from meditative to Dadaistic.

Later Karras and Zafirakos were members of the band Duke Abduction for a short period. The three of

them met again in 2009 and begun jamming in their own studio and creating musical tracks by sampling and editing the recordings of their jam sessions. The name of the band was inspired by the krautrock band Guru Guru and Captain Beefheart’s song “Ella Guru” In 2010 they gave a series of live performances in Athens.

They’ve spent 2010 performing live shows in Athens and giving “Yogi Sister” EPs (vol.1 & 2) -a series of primitive recordings- for free download. In 2011, they made a dynamic comeback with their debut album,

“Baby Guru”, which was released on March 8th via Inner Ear. They also wrote the soundtrack for the theatrical play “Why I Killed My Best Friend”, directed by Vasia Attarian. Their sophomore LP, “Pieces”, was released in October 2012. It was distributed throughout Europe via Rough Trade and V2 Records and the band was invited to perform at Eurosonic Noorderslag and Europavox (plus some gigs across the Netherlands).

In September 2015, Baby Guru officially dived into Phase Two, with the release of the mini-album

“Sunshine Special” (an abstract dedication to the eight shades of summer) and the recording of their fourth LP released via Inner Ear.

01.  BABY GURU - BABY GURU 2011

Baby Guru is an ever evolving musical organism consisting of the unpredictable trio of: Obi Serotone, King Elephant and Sir Kosmiche. Their homemade debut album, which was recorded at King Elephant’s basement, is entirely produced, arranged and mixed by Baby Guru and is released in vinyl and cd from Inner Ear. Walking in the footsteps of Can, Baby Guru record long improvisational jams, without any

rehearsals, following their instincts and the unexpected inspiration and unlocking their subconscious. Later on they would isolate the best parts and end up with a final result, using editing techniques. Looking for the influences of “Baby Guru”, one comes across psychedelic music, the band’s love for samplers, African percussion, electronic methods (looping, splicing, editing) but also kraut pop. It’s worth mentioning that they used no guitars at all during the recordings of the album. Marilu wears flowers on her forehead, puts on a hippie dress and starts dancing in the fields, defying the warnings of Baby Guru. An old 60’s commercial gets married with a minimal African beat while in the background a freak hits the old piano with a violin stick.

The ghosts of Silver Apples and early Kraftwerk (dressed up in punkish outfits) make their appearance. A sampler comes from the sky and Baby Guru couldn’t help following it. Kraut grooves are transformed into a multi-faceted monster with broken saxophones, disorientating samples and electronica-obsessed bass

lines until the whole thing explodes into a punk’n'bass roller coaster. “Inner Space” keeps building and building until Baby Guru find themselves in a state of ecstasy, driving Hank Moody’s car across a shore in California and an old Rolling Stones song is playing on the radio. 80’s post-punk grooves, with an electro-pop flavour, get interrupted by dreamy, mellow soundscapes. Around 3 a.m. in the morning, on the verge of exhaustion they say goodbye…let all the bright light wash all over the dark corridors of your mind baby… Welcome to Guruland! The circle is full and the ritual begins NOW!

Baby Guru's sophomore album, Pieces, was released in October 2012 and it was widely accepted as a

significant step forward compared to ‘’Baby Guru’’. The krautrock influences were still there but this time there were further explorations of the psychedelic rock of the ‘60s and ‘70s, while guitars became a more prominent part of their sound. The album was released in several European countries under distribution by Rough Trade and V2 records, gathering favorable reviews. In the beginning of 2013 the band embarked on a mini tour in the Netherlands to Their third album, titled Marginalia was released in March 2014.

03.  BABY GURU - MARGINALIA 2014

Their third album, titled Marginalia was released in March 2014. The references to krautrock and psychedelia remained, while the band expanded further its music by turning towards new wave and

synthpop of the ‘80s.
The opening track and first single, "Especially when", was built around guitar riffs, an unusual choice for the band. Also, for the first time they included a song with Greek lyrics, “Exegersis”. Once again critical acceptance was very positive with many considering it as Baby Guru's best release. The band did extensive touring to support the release of the album. In October 2014 they appeared in the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, where they were hailed as one of the 5 top discoveries of the festival.

Highly recomended!

Pulp: Different Class (Deluxe Edition 2006)

Though Pulp were more critical of the "Cool Britannia" movement of the 1990s than their peers, they were among the most successful acts of the Brit-pop era -- and thanks to frontman Jarvis Cocker's

eloquent wit, their music has remained vital into the 21st century. At their critical and commercial peak, the band consisted of Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Russell Senior (guitar, violin), Candida Doyle (keyboards), Nick Banks (drums, percussion), Steve Mackey (bass) and Mark Webber (guitar, keyboards). The band's "kitchen sink drama" lyrics, coupled with its references to British culture, led to Cocker and Pulp becoming reluctant figureheads of the Britpop movement.

Pulp were formed in 1978 at The City School in Sheffield by Jarvis Cocker, then 15 years old, and Peter

Dalton, then 14. Cocker's original preference was to name the band after the film Pulp starring Michael Caine, though it was decided that this was too short. Instead, the two took inspiration from a copy of the Financial Times which listed the Arabicas coffee bean in its commodity index. Cocker and Dalton used this, with a slight spelling change, and the band became "Arabicus".

Early rehearsals took place in Cocker's house and featured Cocker, Dalton and Dalton's younger brother

Ian. After finally deciding on "Arabicus Pulp", a fixed line-up was then established: Cocker, Dalton and two friends of theirs, David "Fungus" Lockwood and Mark Swift. The band played their first public gig at Rotherham Arts Centre in July 1980. Later that year, Cocker met future member Russell Senior, who recognised Cocker from his charismatic sales techniques in his part-time job at the local fish market.

For the first 12 years of their existence, the group languished in near total obscurity, releasing a handful of

albums and singles in the '80s to barely any attention. At the turn of the decade, the band began to gain traction, with 1994's major-label debut His 'n' Hers introducing Pulp's fusion of David Bowie and Roxy Music's glam rock, disco, new wave, acid house, Europop, and British indie rock and Cocker's sharp, funny musings on sex and portraits of working-class misfits to a larger audience.

The album paved the way for 1995's multi-platinum, Mercury Prize-winning Different Class, a set of

equally class-conscious and catchy songs like the smash hit "Common People." In the wake of this massive success, Pulp focused on their artistic integrity with 1998's brooding This Is Hardcore and the acoustic introspection of 2001's Scott Walker-produced We Love Life. Occasional touring reunions eventually sparked a return to the studio, and 2025's More confronted aging and nostalgia with a mature version of Pulp's quintessential mix of glamor and gritty reality.

Different Class (released in Japan as Common People) is the fifth studio album by English rock band Pulp, released on 30 October 1995 by Island Records. The album was a critical and commercial success,

entering the UK Albums Chart at number one and winning the 1996 Mercury Music Prize. It included four top-ten singles in the UK, "Common People", "Sorted for E's & Wizz", "Disco 2000" and "Something Changed". Different Class has been certified four times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), and had sold 1.33 million copies in the United Kingdom as of 2020. Widely acclaimed as among the greatest albums of the Britpop era, in 2013, NME ranked the album at number six in its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time while Rolling Stone ranked it number 162 in their 2020 revised version of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The White Stripes: Studio Albums1999 - 2007

Beginning in the late 1990s, the White Stripes sought success within the Detroit music scene, releasing six

singles and two albums. They first found commercial success with their acclaimed third album, White Blood Cells (2001), which propelled the band to the forefront of the garage rock movement. Their fourth album, Elephant (2003), drew further success, winning the band their first Grammy Awards. It produced the single "Seven Nation Army", which became a sports anthem and the band's signature song.

They experimented extensively on their fifth album, Get Behind Me Satan (2005). They returned to their

blues roots with their sixth and final album, Icky Thump (2007), which was praised like the band's earlier albums. By the end of the 2000s, the White Stripes accumulated three entries on the US Billboard Hot 100, eleven entries on the US Alternative Airplay chart, and thirteen entries on the UK singles chart. After a lengthy hiatus from performing and recording, the band dissolved in 2011.

With their unlikely but fascinating mix of arty concepts and raw sounds, the White Stripes were among the

leaders of the early-2000s garage rock revival and helped define the sound of 21st century rock as the decade progressed. Jack and Meg White's clever use of limitations -- from their lineup to their instrumentation to their red, white, and black color scheme -- maximized their creativity, allowing them to bring a surprising number of facets to their seemingly back-to-basics approach.

Meg's straight-ahead, minimalist drumming complemented Jack's freewheeling guitars and vocals

perfectly, and their music touched on not only on obvious forebears such as the Gories and the Stooges, but also Son House and Blind Willie McTell's mythic blues, Led Zeppelin's riffs, the Gun Club's unhinged punk, and the timeless storytelling of country and folk legends such as Loretta Lynn and Bob Dylan.

In 2015, Rolling Stone dubbed the White Stripes the sixth greatest duo of all time. The same publication

included Jack on its list of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" in 2010, and Meg on its list of the "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time" in 2016. In 2024, American Songwriter included the White Stripes on their list of the "Greatest (And Most Influential) Rock Music Duos Ever". In 2025, Ultimate Classic Rock placed the band first on their list of "Top 20 American Rock Bands of the 2000s."

The White Stripes have been described as garage rock, blues rock, alternative rock, punk blues, and indie

rock. They emerged from Detroit's active garage rock revival scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Their contemporaries included bands such as the Von Bondies, the Dirtbombs, the Detroit Cobras, and other bands that Jack included on a compilation album called Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit, which was recorded in his living room. Jack wrote all of the band's lyrics, and he and Meg co-wrote the music.

The White Stripes were notable for having only two musicians, limiting the instruments they could play

live, and lack of a bass player. Jack, the principal writer, said that this was not a problem, and that he "always centered the band around the number three. Everything was vocals, guitar and drums or vocals, piano and drums." Meg herself said that it was "difficult just being two people" but she was comfortable nonetheless. Fans and critics drew comparisons between Jack's prowess on the guitar and Meg's simplistic, reserved drumming. The band additionally drew attention for their preference for antiquated recording equipment.

01. THE WHITE STRIPES -  THE WHITE STRIPES 1999

Minimal to the point of sounding monumental, this Detroit guitar-drums-voice duo makes the most of its aesthetic choices and the spaces between riffage and the big beat. In fact, the White Stripes sound like

arena rock as hand-crafted in the attic. Singer/guitarist Jack White's voice is a singular, evocative combination of punk, metal, blues, and backwoods while his guitar work is grand and banging with just enough lyrical touches of slide and subtle solo work to let you know he means to use the metal-blues riff collisions just so. Drummer Meg White balances out the fretwork and the fretting with methodical, spare, and booming cymbal, bass drum, and snare cracks.

03. THE WHITE STRIPES - WHITE BLOOD CELLS 2001 (2CD DELUXE EDITION 2021)

Despite the seemingly instant attention surrounding the White Stripes -- glowing write-ups in glossy magazines like Rolling Stone and Mojo, guest lists boasting names like Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson, and appearances on national TV -- on White Blood Cells, they stay true to the approach that brought them

this success in the first place. Jack and Meg White's third effort for Sympathy for the Record Industry wraps their powerful, deceptively simple style around meditations on fame, love, and betrayal. As produced by Doug Easley, it sounds exactly how an underground sensation's breakthrough album should: bigger and tighter than their earlier material, but not so polished that it will disappoint longtime fans. Admittedly, White Blood Cells lacks some of the White Stripes' blues influence and urgency, but it perfects the pop skills the duo honed on De Stijl and expands on them.

04. THE WHITE STRIPES - ELEPHANT 2003

Almost as much fun to analyze as it is to listen to, Elephant overflows with quality -- it's full of tight songwriting, sharp, witty lyrics, and judiciously used basses and tumbling keyboard melodies that enhance

the band's powerful simplicity (and the excellent "The Air Near My Fingers" features all of these). Crucially, the White Stripes know the difference between fame and success; while they may not be entirely comfortable with their fame, they've succeeded at mixing blues, punk, and garage rock in an electrifying and unique way ever since they were strictly a Detroit phenomenon. On these terms, Elephant is a phenomenal success.

05. THE WHITE STRIPES - GET BEHIND ME SATAN 2005

According to Jack White, Get Behind Me Satan deals with "characters and the ideal of truth," but in truth,

the album is just as much about what people expect from the White Stripes and what they themselves want to deliver. Advance publicity for the album stated that it was written on piano, marimba, and acoustic guitar, suggesting that it was going to be a quiet retreat to the band's little room after the big sound, and

bigger success, of Elephant. Though Jack and Meg still find fresh, arty reinterpretations of their classic inspirations, this time the results are exciting in a different way than their usual fare; and while the album was made in just two weeks, it takes awhile to unravel and appreciate. Get Behind Me Satan may confuse and even push away some White Stripes fans, but the more the band pushes itself, the better.

06. THE WHITE STRIPES - ICKY THUMP 2007

Given the White Stripes’ reputation for powerful concerts, it’s a little surprising that they waited until

more than a decade into their career to release a live album. However, Under Great White Northern Lights was worth the wait: While nothing can really replace seeing the band live, this set captures most of their riveting on-stage presence. The album was recorded during the Stripes’ 2007 Canadian tour, which was such a special experience for them that they chronicled it with a DVD as well.
