This is a compilation not available in the music stores or in the internet. This is a complilation made by Urban Aspirines respecting your love for good music and turnig our back to trash Mainstream music (Madonna, Lady Gaga e.t.c). The Rock women are many and maybe I don't know all of them, so forgive me if I forgot some names. I didn't put in this compilation great women as Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and others from the Blues Scene, the Country (Not the Country Rock), The Soul, The Funk, The Jazz and Heavy metal scene. As a Rock musician or better as a DJ in the most famous Rock bars of Athens, I think I put every song in the right place in the list.
Please don't send me stupid comments about names I forgot to put in this compilation. You can understand that I needed a lot of time to put all these names in this list, working very hard, selecting their songs, writing a small biography about them, collecting photos and drinking a lot of beers. All songs are Flac because great music needs great quality of sound. No Mp3 here.
This compilation will be completed in 7 parts, containing more than 300 Artists.
Thank you. KOSTAS

19. RACHEL NAGY - MARY RAMIREZ (THE DETROIT COBRAS)
RACHEL was just RACHEL. She didn't think she could sing for years. After shows she would start crying, says Cobra, an understated member of Detroit's rock royalty herself. It's just that spiritual thing, you want to do good, you want to connect and maybe you think you're being fake about it.
Guitarist MARY RAMIREZ brings a hard punching attack which is almost reminiscent of Johnny Ramone at times. She cites 5 Royales’ guitarist Lowman Pauling as her primary influence – himself a criminally underrated guitar slinger in the blues tradition. Countering Mary’s axe attack is vocalist Rachel Nagy – with a voice so powerful, distinctive and emotive that it is insane to think that the likes of Adele are considered the benchmark of great female vocals, when compared to Nagy she sounds like a blustering pretender to the crown of authentic soul.
THE DETROIT COBRAS were an American garage rock band from Detroit, Michigan, which was formed around 1994 by vocalist Rachel Nagy and guitarist Mary Ramirez, with a constantly changing assortment of (mostly male) sidemen. Nagy died on January 14, 2022, and no plans to continue without her have been announced. Their retro-garage rock formula proved popular in the UK and prompted the London-based Rough Trade Records to sign the band. They released an EP, Seven Easy Pieces, in 2003 and their third album, Baby, in 2004. Baby broke with the Cobras' tradition in that it included one original song, "Hot Dog (Watch Me Eat)". At an early age, Foo spent time in India studying the musical traditions of dhrupad and qawwali.
THE RAVEONETTES are a Danish indie rock duo, consisting of Sune Rose Wagner on guitar, instruments and vocals, and Sharin Foo on bass, guitar and vocals. Their music is characterized by close two-part vocal harmonies inspired by The Everly Brothers coupled with hard-edged electric guitar overlaid with liberal doses of noise. Their songs juxtapose the structural and chordal simplicity of 1950s and 1960s rock with intense electric instrumentation, driving beats, and often dark lyrical content (e.g., crime, drugs, murder, suicide, love, lust, and betrayal), similar to another of the band's influences, The Velvet Underground.
21. LYDIA LUNCH (TEENAGE JESUS AMD THE JERKS)
LYDIA ANNE KOCH (born June 2, 1959) is an American singer, poet, writer, actress and self-empowerment speaker. Her career was spawned by the New York City no wave scene in the 1970s, predominantly as the singer and guitarist of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. Her work typically features provocative and confrontational noise music delivery, and has maintained an anti-commercial ethic, operating independently of major labels and distributors. The Boston Phoenix named Lunch one of the ten most influential performers of the 1990s. Her collaboration with Sonic Youth called "Death Valley '69" was named one of "The 50 Most Evil Songs Ever" by Kerrang! TEENAGE JESUS AND THE JERKS were an influential American no wave band, based in New York City, who formed part of the city's no wave movement. Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and their comrade bands Mars, Contortions and DNA, defined radicalism not as a return to roots but as deracination. Curiously, the no wave groups staged their revolt against rock tradition by using the standard rock format of guitars, bass and drums. It was as if they felt the easy electronic route to making post-rock noise was too easy. Instead, they used rock's tools against itself. Which is why no wave music irresistibly invites metaphors of dismemberment, desecration, defiling rock's corpse.

24. IMA - Alix (LA TULIPE NOIRE)
IMA: Lead vocalist Ima is emotive and experienced enough to do a lot with her great voice. Occasional spoken verse in Greek and English emphasizes the theatrical quality of this excellent music. ALIX: Keyboardist Alix sounds like she strungles against difficulties to come back home, as Odysseus did. And she did it ! Through "Polyphemus" and the following "Circe" and "Tiresias" Alix utilizes common variations and ties these great tunes together conceptually.
LA TULIPE NOIRE: Pioneers of the new generation of Greek progressive rock, Athens'(Greece) La TULIPE NOIRE present a tightly woven tapestry of sonic pastels which never really escape beyond the bounds of their self-imposed prison. This talented line-up performs a refined and quiet progressive rock that develops baroque and solemn melodies. The group formed in Athens Greece in 1997. Initial members: Lena on vocals, Alix (piano & keys), S. Kontakis (el. & ac. guitar), Y. Barkoulas (el. & ac. guitar), George F. (drums) and finally Hyde on bass guitar.

She rose to prominence as the lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter of the alternative rock band Babes in Toyland, which she formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1987. She has been noted for her unusual vocal style alternately consisting of shrill screams, whispering, and speaking in tongues, as well as for her guitar playing style, which incorporates "jagged" tones with "psychotic rockabilly rhythms".
KATASTROPHY WIFE was an American rock band formed by Kat Bjelland and her former husband Glen Mattson in 1998. Bjelland also fronted the punk rock band Babes in Toyland between 1987 and 2001. The band currently consists of Bjelland on lead vocals and guitar and her boyfriend, Adrian Johnson, on drums. The band released two albums, Amusia (2001) and All Kneel (2004). A third album was due for release in 2008, but was later cancelled. In May 2014, a 10th anniversary reissue of All Kneel was released as part of Record Store Day. She established a fan base as the front woman of the band Automatic Loveletter. In 2007 - in the band's earliest years - she became friends with Kevin Lyman. After the summer of 2011 and working the circuit solo for the first time, Juliet Simms has since produced her own content as a solo artist. In 2011, Juliet Simms auditioned for Season 2 of NBC's The Voice. She sang 'Oh! Darling' by The Beatles for her blind audition, and chose CeeLo Green as her coach. She went on to cover songs such as 'Roxanne' by The Police and 'It's A Mans Mans Mans World' by James Brown. After placing second on The Voice, Simms signed with Universal Records, and then ultimately left the record label due to lack of creative control. CHRISSIE HYNDE had a lot of shared history with Sex Pistols I wasn't aware of till I watched Pistols.
ReplyDeleteKostas, which songs do you believe enjoyed particular popularity in Greece during the 70s, 80s and 90s? I can think of Moonchild, The Final Countdown, Total Eclipse (thanks to the Campari ad), also the story about Julia that someone didn't want others to learn about the group Pavlov's Dog, It's A Wonderful Life, Run To You (Bryan Adams).
