The Teardrop Explodes: Everybody Wants To Shag... 1990 + Piano 1990 + Zoology 2004 + Peel Sessions (1977-82) 2007

The Teardrop Explodes originated as a critical band in the emerging Liverpool post-punk scene of the

late 1970s, which included Echo & The Bunnymen, their former manager Bill Drummond of The JAMS/KLF, The Mighty WAH! and future pop stars Holly Johnson of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Lightning Seeds Ian Broudie, who would also produce many bands from the scene. The group also launched the career of group frontman Julian Cope and keyboard player David Balfe, who later founded Food Records and signed and mentored Blur.

The Teardrop Explodes was formed by Cope and Simpson from the ashes of A Shallow Madness (a

band which also included Ian McCulloch, later in Echo & The Bunnymen). Together with Finkler and Dwyer they released their debut single Sleeping Gas / Camera Camera / Kirkby Workers Dream Fades 1979. After that Simpson left to form The Wild Swans, and was replaced by David Balfe (ex-Dalek I Love You and Big in Japan), who would leave/be sacked/come back several times during their lifetime.

In 1980 they began to record their debut album Everybody Wants to Shag The Teardrop Explodes (yes, the title was recycled later) for Zoo. It was never released. Instead they got signed by Phonogram,

replaced Finkler with Alan Gill (also ex-Dalek I Love You), re-recorded some songs and released them as Kilimanjaro. They got their first Top Ten hit with Reward / Strange House in the Snow, but by then Gill had already left to be replaced by Troy Tate. Cope decided that he didn't want to play bass anymore and that Balfe had to go. In came Alfie Agius and Jeff Hammer, but before the release of their second album Wilder, they were replaced by Ronnie François (ex-The Sinceros) and Balfe (again).

Stripped down to a trio they recorded their third and final album Everybody Wants to Shag... The Teardrop Explodes 1982, but split before it was finished. It was finally released in 1990.

  1. Great, i love all those Julian Cope and Teardrop Explodes. I don't have any of the ones listed here. Thank you. The last few days i've been listening to all the Greek bands that you copied to me on cd. In addition to the great music, it is above all the quality of the recordings that inspires me. Maybe better than the original, ha ha....Everyone likes it, but especially the samplers.

    1. Hello Josef. I listened the compilation from Austria and the Beatniks. I'm surprised with all these bands from late 60s - early 70s. There was a great underground scene. I'm wondering what happens now. Thank you very much.

    2. I'm glad that you like the sampler. There are also very obscure singles and they are often accepted or found under the most adverse circumstances. The friend could tell you a novel about it. The Beatniks are pretty weaks ( in my opinion) and more obscure than good.
