Holy Troika: Holy Trinity LP 2021

 

In the forested suburbs of Moscow, Russia, far from the contemporary city sounds, an explosion of psychedelia snakes through the trees. Time travel is real, Holy Troika fell out of a wormhole from 1969.
              

Holy Troika, Diana (vocals), Ilya (organ) and Alexi (guitar) delicately blend a rhythm section evocative of The Doors with melodies reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane. Having recorded their album on vintage equipment from the USSR and beyond, their post modern aesthetic will sit comfortably with fans of Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Moody Blues and Love....
              

In May 2021, Greek label Blackspin Records released it as a limited edition vinyl LP (BSRLP12)! (Limited edition of 300 copies, 180gr "Siberian-Permafrost" marbled vinyl!). The band is called Holy Trinity, but according to the label and the cover of the album, the band is called Holy Troika! Either is Holy Trinity or Holy Troika, it’s of no importance because the music inside that album is amazing!

 

Taken from their self titled debut album HOLY TRINITY plumb the depths of late 60’s heavy psych on the first video released from the album ‘It’s Not You’. Shot in Russia and oozing a post cold war bleakness that contrasts with the brightness of the track.
         

They clearly enjoy weaving solos throughout non- tradition song structures, wheeling around like a Ray Manzarek curiosity. Eerie, spindly guitar sounds lie within the mix, voicing nostalgic progressions evocative of 60s West Coast psychedelia.
             

The term "psychedelic" was coined in 1956 by psychiatrist Humphry Osmond in a letter to LSD exponent Aldous Huxley and used as an alternative descriptor for hallucinogenic drugs in the context of psychedelic psychotherapy. As the countercultural scene developed in San Francisco, the terms acid rock and psychedelic rock were used in 1966 to describe the new drug-influenced music and were being widely used by 1967.
                 

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but acid rock may be distinguished as a more extreme variation that was heavier, louder, relied on long jams, focused more directly on LSD, and made greater use of distortion.
                

Holy Trinity haven’t released a concept album in the conventional sense more an aural collection of images of love, religion and traditional Russian folk tales which weave their way throughout the album forging connections between the compositions.
