The Godfathers: 5 Albums 1986 - 1995

The Godfathers were formed by Peter and Chris Coyne (vocals and bass, respectively) after the demise

of The Sid Presley Experience in 1985, joined by Mike Gibson (guitar), Kris Dollimore (guitar) and George Mazur (drums). Peter Coyne had briefly worked as a music journalist from 1980 to 1982 for ZigZag and Record Mirror. Fellow TSPE member, and later Godfather, Del Bartle, went on to form The Unholy Trinity with drummer Kevin Murphy.

Arriving nearly a decade after the first rise of U.K. punk, London's the Godfathers were a band that shrewdly embraced punk's hard-edged sound and outlook while adding elements of hard rock, R&B,

and pop. As a consequence, they gave their music a level of craft and polish that made them accessible without blunting the rage in their best work. After independent single releases produced by Vic Maile, and collected on their debut album, Hit by Hit, they signed to Epic Records in 1987. Extensive tours of the UK, Europe and the United States followed.

Single and title track of their first album "Birth, School, Work, Death" made the U.S. Billboard Top 40

in 1988 after college radio and MTV airplay but the band were less commercially successful in the UK. Released in 1989, More Songs About Love & Hate produced another hit, "She Gives Me Love," which rose to number eight on the Modern Rock chart.

Album Unreal World (1991) followed, with Chris Burrows replacing Kris Dollimore on guitar in time

for the latter, after which the Godfathers left Epic and released a live album and two studio albums on German label Intercord in the early to mid-1990s. The band ceased activity in 2000.

The complete original lineup of the Godfathers returned in 2008 for a reunion tour, but in 2009 Kris

Dollimore left, to be replaced by new guitarist Del Bartle. Drummer George Mazur bowed out not long after, with Grant Nicholas taking his place. The new lineup of the Godfathers cut a live album, Shot Live at the 100 Club, that was released in 2010 to celebrate the group's first 25 years.

The band returned to the studio for the first time in 18 years to record 2013's Jukebox Fury, and in 2017

the band's latest lineup of lead vocalist Peter Coyne, guitarists Steve Crittal and Mauro Venegas, bassist Darren Birch, and drummer Tim James delivered a studio album of all new material, A Big Bad Beautiful Noise.

01. THE GODFATHERS - HIT BY HIT 1986

Containing the three songs from each of their first three single and a cover of Lennon's "Cold Turkey," This EP/mini album is as strong and consistent as their first album and sounds even fresher.

02. THE GODFATHERS - BIRTH, SCHOOL, WORK, DEATH 1988

Wearing Mafia suits and skinny ties, the Godfathers had a mean look that matched their name. And

their sound was similarly tough: brass-knuckled punches in the form of menacing, explosive riffs; venom-spewing, nihilistic vocals; body-slamming percussion. Yet the Godfathers never forget the importance of the hook. The bleak title track -- with its gloomy shouted chorus of "Birth, School, Work, Death" -- has head-bobbing basslines and a toe-tapping drum beat.

03. THE GODFATHERS - MORE SONGS ABOUT LOVE AND HATE 1989

The Godfathers' second album for Epic, 1989's More Songs About Love & Hate, lacked an instant classic single like "Birth School Work Death" from their 1987 debut, but otherwise it came close to

matching that album's muscle and fury and confirmed the band had plenty of offer. Producer Vic Maile gave these sessions just a dash more polish than their previous work, but for the most part the small differences in the sound of the two albums seem to come from the band; two years of hard touring made the Godfathers even tighter than they were before, and their tough, meat-and-potatoes sound had picked up a bit more heft and precision along the way.

04. THE GODFATHERS - UNREAL WORLD 1993

The London-based Godfathers add guitarist Chris Burrows (in place of Kris Dollimore) to their lineup for their fourth studio album, Unreal World. Veteran producer Steve Brown (the Cult, the Pogues,

Manic Street Preachers) takes the helm and the results are never less than satisfying. The Godfathers deliver muscular and meaty rock & roll with the energy of the Ramones and the Stooges, and a nod toward '60s melodicism. The  album, which gets stronger as it progresses, ranges from the sweet, unabashed guitar pop of "Believe in Yourself" and "Drag Me Down Again" to the metallic stomp of the equally hooky "Something Good About You" and "Can't Try Harder." Unreal World is a thunderous slab of rock played with passion and sincerity.

05. THE GODFATHERS - AFTERLIFE 1995

Peter Coyne:  I would like The Godfathers to be remembered as a great British rock & roll band who

made some fantastic singles & classic albums – right from the start to the very end. I would also like us to be remembered as a brilliant, kick ass live band who brought a lot of pleasure to punters all round the world. On my gravestone you can chisel “He came, he saw, he’s gone – awopbopalubopalopbamboom!”
