King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard: 8 Albums 2011 - 2020

KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD is an experimental rock band from Australia with

a stable line up of seven members.
Stu Mackenzie, Joe Walker, Eric Moore, Ambrose Kenny-Smith, Lucas Skinner, Cook Craig, and Michael Cavanagh all grew up and went to school in the Melbourne region. They started off as a loose jam crew, until the band once was asked by a friend to play at a local show.

They were a seven piece band, (now they are six), with Stu leading the charge and he apparently wanted to call the band GIZZARD GIZZARD but in the end he combined the suggestions of

other band members with his. The name “King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard” derives from the band’s appreciation for the psychedelic king himself, Jim Morrison of The Doors… Who would commonly go by the title of “The Lizard King”.
The word ‘Gizzard’? Well, Stu Mackenzie, the bassist, vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist and FLUTE player of the band wanted the name “Gizzard Gizzard” in there.

The band's current lineup consists of Stu Mackenzie (vocals, guitar), Ambrose Kenny-Smith (vocals,

harmonica, keyboards), Cook Craig (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Joey Walker (guitar, vocals), Lucas Harwood (bass, vocals), and Michael Cavanagh (drums, vocals). They are known for exploring multiple genres, staging energetic live shows, and building a prolific discography.

They were able to find a compromise. What sounds like a swift descent into madness or preface for a

cult escape thinkpiece is actually pretty standard behaviour for a passionate King Gizzard fan. Their music to date has encompassed metal, folk, jazz and dance music; they have experimented with dense concept records and microtonal tunings. The artist Jason Galea has created all of the band's album art, and a majority of their music videos.

During some time their music was dominated by a psychedelic garage and acid rock style. Gradually

though they went on to widen the musical scope with the result of some progressive rock albums, for example 'Polygondwanaland' and 'Sketches Of Brunswick East'. Both were released in 2017, which must have been a very inspiring year for them. While covering diverse genres nowadays, every new album is appearing like another surprise bag.

Noted for their prolific discography, in 2017 the band fulfilled a promise to release five studio albums

within the calendar year, and also marked the beginning of a trilogy of microtonal albums with Flying Microtonal Banana. Subsequent releases integrated heavy metal, synth-pop, and progressive rock, and feature lyrics that address environmental themes and a connected fictional universe termed the "Gizzverse" by fans.

In 2022, the band once again released five studio albums in one calendar year, with three being released

that October. Their 26th  album, Flight b741, was released on the 9th of August, 2024 - it is their first album released on their new record label, p(doom) Records.Their 27th and most recent album, Phantom Island, was released in 2025. Above all their live shows are said to be distinctly energetic. Every single song on their discography is a kaleidoscopic journey that has a story to tell… all on its own.

01.  WILLOUGHBY'S BEACH (EP) 2011

Willoughby's Beach, finds the band bursting out of the garage and delivering a record sprinkled with echoing yelps, stomping beats, supercharged riffs, and tough-as-rattlesnakes mid-fi production.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's sense of unfettered sonic exploration makes it easy to mistake them for a long-forgotten relic of the psych explosion of the 1960s. With a far-out sound that, at times, feels barely held together, the band evoke the eclectic rock experimentation of Frank Zappa's early work with the Mothers of Invention, the anything-goes feeling of the Flaming Lips, and the demented glee of a random, obscure '60s group plucked from a Pebbles compilation as they follow their musical flights of fancy wherever they might lead.

02.  FLOAT ALONG - FILL YOUR LUNGS (SEPTEMBER 2013)

Float Along – Fill Your Lungs was released in September 2013, seven months after their previous album, Eyes Like the Sky. It is the band's third album and fifth recorded release, and the first to feature

second drummer, Eric Moore, using a drum kit as opposed to theremin and keyboards as used previously. The album was recorded in home studios and sheds in Darraweit Guim, Deniliquin, and Anglesea, where they experimented with a psychedelic sound as opposed to the Western sound on their previous album.[4][6][7] The band furthered their experimentation by using synthesizers and the sitar, while also using unique time signatures in their music for the first time. It was produced by Paul Maybury, Jarrad Brown, and band member Stu Mackenzie.

03.  ODDMENTS (MARCH 2014)

Oddments was announced on 14 January 2014, with "Vegemite" serving as the album's lead single. Lead vocalist Stu Mackenzie said that the song was "probably the most literal song [he's] ever written".

Oddments consists of outtakes from the band's prior releases, with the album serving as a way to compile the songs without necessarily adhering to a sound or theme as the band had done up until that point; the oddment nature of the songs (being leftovers from previous albums) gave the album its name. The album opener "Alluda Majaka" refers to and features an audio sample of the 1995 Telugu film of the same name.
