The Dolly Rocker Movement: Electric Sunshine 2006 + A Purple Journey Into The Mod Machine 2007 + Our Brave New World 2009 + Your Side Of Town 2013

Everything started back in 2002, in the Land Of Oz, by a neo-psychedelic band called The Dolly

Rocker Movement, formed by singer-guitarist Daniel Poulter.
They managed to release three full-length albums, “Electric Sunshine” (2006), “A Purple Journey Through the Mod Machine” (2007) and “Our Days Mind the Tyme” (2009), through independent Australian record label Off the Hip before disbanding in 2013.

The Dolly Rocker Movement were an Australian neo-psychedelic rock band, formed in 2002 by

singer and guitarist, Daniel Poulter,
the Australian line-up included, Ricky Drabsch (bass), Martin Walters (keyboards) and Christopher Rudge (drums). In late 2009 Poulter travelled to Los Angeles to start demo recording new solo and band material with producer Rob Campanella. There, the band was reformed to include de Silver, Jimmy Sweet (formerly bassist of Hot Hot Heat), Emily Stoia (keyboards), and T.J. McDonnell (drums). The outfit disbanded in 2013.

In 2006 they released not one, but two critically acclaimed contemporary psychedelic masterpieces. The first, Electric Sunshine, illustrated the chemically enhanced blend of folk, garage and country that characterised the band’s early set. The follow-up album, Purple Journey Into the Mod Machine, adopted as its thematic premise a journey through space and time with even more impressive songs as the result.

Our Days Mind the Tyme owes it’s genesis to the psychedelic 60s, and the influence of Sky Saxon, Arthur Lee and Syd Barrett, yet sparkles as bright, and fresh as the morning sun. From the baroque pop of “A Sound for Two”, to the tight garage licks of “My Heavenly Way” and “Sold for Sinners”, to the billowing pop elegance of “The Only One” and “The Ecstacy Once Told”, this is an album touched by the hand of spiritual enlightenment. Our Days Mind The Tyme was released 22.02.10 on LP/CD and as Download.

Stephen Haag of PopMatters observed, "There's more to this stuff than just a Hammond organ and a fuzzbox. DRM has done its homework, and even mix things up with some surf/horror-garage vibes."

Fausto Turi of Freakout magazine opined, "the group takes the best – starting with the style of the beautiful cover image ... – the British mersey beat, and the Californian electroacoustic psychedelia, with sparkling certain retrofuturistic sounds, but adding – and that is what ultimately matters most – a good quality of musical writing.

They are influenced by late 60´s garage, psychedelia and West coast folk. The charismatic band leader

Daniel Poulter writes beautiful and well-crafted songs and beneath the psychedelic and colourful surface The Dolly Rocker Movement is simply a great pop band with a destinctive sound of their own. Rich psychedelic blooms of a hundred colors and a thousand shades, come to light with the support of that miraculous instrument that is the farfisa piano, present in every song."

Many questions to answer. Many answers to question. You 'll find them on the outside. Where our

world is filled with electric sunshine by day and a yellow moon by night. Ears tuned into a blend of flowering psychedelia, chemical country and a dusty garage vibe. One way to get high is come along for the ride.

THE DOLLY ROCKER - A PURPLE JOURNEY INTO THE MOD MACHINE 2007

The Dolly Rocker Movement do far more than pass The Acid Test on their second album, “A Purple Journey Into The Mod Machine,” where with dancing eyes and enchanting lysergic lyrics they swirl, soar, and expand the mystic boundaries of the psychedelic scene that was laid down in the mid sixties, infiltrating your wayward mind with layered textures and visionary emotions, and it’s all due a

production complexity that is brilliant, tight and well considered. One of the first things you notice is the stylish conjuring luminescent environment into which The Dolly Rocker Movement invite you...making it plain from the get go, that they’re happy to have you stay as long as you like. Each song has not only been sonically considered, but so have the song placements, creating a soundscape that moves with fluid motions, with songs never stumbling over each other, tracking in a sequence that is as much a visionary wonder as it is a delight for your ears...sounding for all the world as if they’ve stepped out of the golden era of psychedelic music, yet are wholly original and effortless.

THE DOLLY ROCKER MOVEMENT - YOUR SIDE OF TOWN  (7" SINGLE) 2013

"There has been a little quiet around the Australian band The Dolly Rocker Movement since they released their third album Our Days Mind the Tyme in 2010. Main man Daniel J. Poulter moved to the

US for a while and when he returned to Australia he started a new band called Kill City Creeps.
But Poulter has not completely forgotten about The Dolly Rocker Movement which is why Bad Afro is proud to present a brand new 7” EP. The 7” single is featuring a bonus track compared to the download version in shape of “Girl of the 13th hour”, a cover of the obscure Texas garage band Chaz and the Classics from 1967."
Your Side of Town is a slightly melancholic psych pop song with vibrant guitar licks and cool organs while Silently We Sung has a more quirky beat miles away from the usual garage thang.

Magma: Kobaia 1970

Magma is a French progressive rock band founded in Paris in 1969 by self-taught drummer Christian

Vander, who claimed as his inspiration a "vision of humanity's spiritual and ecological future" that profoundly disturbed him. The style of progressive rock that Vander developed with Magma is termed "Zeuhl", and has been applied to other bands in France operating in the same period, and to some recent Japanese bands.

In early 1967, drummer Christian Vander played in the Wurdalaks and Cruciferius Lobonz, two rhythm

and blues bands. With these groups, he wrote his first compositions, "Nogma" and "Atumba". The death of John Coltrane saddened Vander, who left the groups and traveled to Italy. He returned to France in 1969 and met saxophonist René Garber and bassist and conductor Laurent Thibault. Together with singer Lucien Zabuski and organist Francis Moze, they created the group Uniweria Zekt Magma Composedra Arguezdra, shortened to Magma.

After their first tour, Magma experienced significant lineup turnover. Vocalist Lucien Zabuski was replaced with Klaus Blasquiz, and pianist Eddie Rabin, double bassist Jacky Vidal, and guitarist Claude Engel also joined the group. The group worked on material for three months in a house in the

Chevreuse Valley. Eddie Rabin was replaced by François Cahen on keyboards, and Laurent Thibault abandoned bass to devote himself to production. Francis Moze became the new bassist. The band also expanded with a brass section, consisting of Teddy Lasry on saxophone and clarinet, Richard Raux on saxophone and flute, and Paco Charlery on trumpet. The group's first album, Magma, was released in the spring of 1970 by Philips Records. The group caused a sensation but audience reactions were mixed.

After the album was released, Claude Engel, Richard Raux, and Paco Charlery left the group. Jeff Seffer replaced Raux on saxophone, and Louis Toesca replaced Charlery on trumpet. Their second

album, 1001° Centigrades, was released in April 1971. The album won the band more exposure, including a performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In August 1972, Magma released the album The Unnamables, under the alias Univeria Zekt. However, the album sold only 1,500 copies. Many musicians left the band that year, including François Cahen, Louis Toesca, Jeff Seffer, Francis Moze, and Teddy Lasry. That same year, Christian Vander recorded the soundtrack for Yvan Lagrange's film Tristan et Iseult.

In 1973, Vander formed a new lineup of the band, adding Stella Vander as a second vocalist, Claude Olmos on guitar, Jannick Top replacing Francis Moze on bass, René Garber on saxophone and clarinet, and Jean-Luc Manderlier on keyboards, among others. This new version of the band would release their

most famous work Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh, which would later become their most acclaimed album, and gave them international fame, including a spot at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival, their first American performance. In 1974, under Vander's name, the band released a soundtrack album accompanying Yvan Lagrange's 1972 film Tristan et Iseult, also known as Ẁurdah Ïtah; under Magma's name, they followed up with Köhntarkösz, which was successful among fans, but not received as well among the public as Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh.

The band would then go on a long, year-and-a-half long tour of France, and after another member shakeup (Bernard Paganotti replacing Jannick Top on bass, Didier Lockwood added as a violinist, Jean-

Pol Asseline and Benot Widemann replacing Gerard Bikialo on keyboards, and Gabriel Federow replacing Claude Olmos on guitar), released their first live album, Live / Hhaï, in December 1975, recorded at the Taverne de l'Olympia in Paris.Vander created a fictional language, Kobaïan, in which most lyrics are sung. In a 1977 interview with Vander and long-time Magma vocalist Klaus Blasquiz, Blasquiz said that Kobaïan is a "phonetic language made by elements of the Slavonic and Germanic languages to be able to express some things musically.

The language has of course a content, but not word by word." Vander himself has said, "When I wrote, the sounds [of Kobaïan] came naturally with it—I didn't intellectualise the process by saying 'Ok, now

I'm going to write some words in a particular language', it was really sounds that were coming at the same time as the music. " In the course of their first album, the band tells the story of a group of people fleeing a doomed Earth to settle on the planetKobaïa. Subsequently, conflict arises when the Kobaïans - descendants of the original colonists - encounter other Earth refugees. Later albums tell different stories set in more ancient times; however, the Kobaïan language remains an integral part of the music.

MAGMA - KOBAIA

This needs to be heard by everyone who likes music that builds cerebral muscle. Extreme avant-prog

monsters Magma have carved a multi-decade career out of challenging musical conventions and defying expectations.
You will be smarter after hearing Magma's brand of eclectic sound and fury. Christian Vander is a huge fan of Frank Zappa's orchestral works, and it comes through in the arrangements. This album is their first, and is a good introduction. Move on to Magma Live for more in this vein.

Wind: Seasons 1971 + Morning 1972

One of the pioneers of the early 70's German progressive rock scene. They were formed in mid- 60's in

Erlangen under the name Bentox and offering a beat sound. In 1969 they were renamed to Chromosom, this time they added elements from the West Coast sound in their style.By 1970 Bernd Leistner leads the band as a vocalist and the band dramatically changed its sound, now under the name Wind. Their debut "Seasons" was released in 1971 on the obscure low budget label +Plus+,which managed to release only three albums before closing.

WIND - SEASONS 1971

This is a prog rock classic from Germany. The debut of Wind is a keyboard orientated work, heavily

influenced by the first three albums of Uriah Heep. Nevertheless, they have their own sound, which is more in the underground vein, like many other albums recorded in Germany during the early 70's. Four of the five band members sing (well) and there is no german accent, typical of many Krautrock bands back then. Wind tried their best to achieve success, and maybe they would if they continued to write and record albums like their debut.

A weak point in "Seasons" is the sound. The music of Wind demanded a better sound production, and

even for a 1971 album the sound is a bit poor. The songwriting is really good. There are heavy prog songs, like the fantastic opener "What Do We Do Now" and "Dear Little Friend", and calm, like "Now It's Over" and "Romance", a keyboard melody passage, which serves as a bridge before the floating melodies of "Springwind"."Red Morningbird" is the 16-minute album's epic, my favourite album track.

The band's character is in full display here, including heavy, melodic and deeply emotional moments, which reach a peak in the beginning of the 11th minute before a rather psychedelic ending. Great

album. "Seasons" is placed exactly on the line between the Hard Rock sound of the early 70's and the upcoming snowball of the Progresive Rock movement. The album and the band deserve some wider recognition for their daring sound and high levels of energy throughout the listening.Strongly recommended to fans of the new-born progressive sound around 1970.

WIND - MORNING 1972

Originally released in 1972, as this was the obscure German "heavy progressive" band's follow-

up to their first record "Season". Much different than their debut album.
This album will sure to please anyone who liked the apocolyptic feel of King Crimson's Epitah with the mellotron swirls and melancholic melodies that reflect doom. For anyone who likes mellotrons, I highly recommend this. In addition to the mellotron swirls and sometimes dramatic vocals, it was a pleasant surprise to hear vocal harmonies much in the way of early Crosby Stills and Nash.

The only weak song on this album is the closing track Josephine which should have perhaps been left

off the album. It's not a horrible song. It's just a straight ahead rocker with no progressive tendancies and has nothing to do with the general flow of the album. Best track is Dragon's Maid but they're all good except for the closer. This group wrote only two albums, they absolutely different, but to them always it would be desirable to return and listen! Wind Morning - very warm album, is written talently has the unique sounding - the most beautiful melodies!
