Various: New Rose Story 1980 - 2000

THE TROGGS

New Rose Records, also known by the short form New Rose, was a French record company that emerged in 1980 from the music shop of the same name, which was run by the French Patrick Mathé and Louis Thevenon in Paris.

THE GUN CLUB

They grew into the biggest indie label in Europe, and also promoted numerous smallest labels through their distribution activity. In 1992 the label was sold to Fnac Music, but disappeared early in 1994. After that, Patrick Mathé created Last Call Records, taking most part of the New Rose catalog of artists, and also reissued some records amongst new releases.

THE CRAMPS

The company, which was constituted as an independent label, gained international popularity throughout the 1980s and, in addition to local artists, also signed numerous foreign bands. The musical spectrum ranged from conventional rock to punk, post-punk, gothic and cold wave to electronic music.

SKY SAXON

In 1992, New Rose Records was bought by the French media and department store group Fédération Nationale d'Achat des Cadres (FNAC for short) and ceased its activities in the spring of 1994. Patrick Mathé then founded the record label Last Call Records, where a few of the former New Rose Records artists found a new home.

PAUL ROLAND

Several sub-labels (including Lively Art, Division Nada and Fan Club Records) were integrated into New Rose Records. The label also acted as a distributor and worked with companies such as 4AD, Rough Trade and L'Invitation au Suicide.

DR FEELGOOD

The NR ### you can find on the releases are not catalogue numbers, but price codes (New Rose was also one of the biggest independent distributors in France). These codes are not unique and therefore should only be entered in the BAOI section.

JOHNNY THUNDERS

New Rose records releases were distributed initially by RCA (first releases, from 1981 to mid 1982), then by New Rose until late 1992.
In this period, except for the first records distributed by New Rose in 1982, a price code can be found on the sleeves: NR 1xx for 7", NR 2xx for 12", NR 3xx for LPs, NR 6xx for CD singles, NR 7xx for the CD albums.

BO DIDDLEY

Also from 1984 to en 1986, Musidisc (co)distributed New Rose records (adding their own code MU xxx). From late 1992 (after label was sold to Fnac Music), the distribution was done by New Rose / Wotre Music Distribution (code WM xxx). New Rose Closed in 1994.

This release, without the bonus Live CD (given with Various - New Rose Story 1980 - 2000 + Live Recordings), was the first release, distributed before the Anniversary night at the Elysée Montmartre in Nov.2000 (where have been recorded 5 tracks on that bonus Live CD). Some remaining copies have been distributed by Patrick Mathé with the Live CD.

  1. An open word - i hope ypu are not snubbed. I personally don't think much of such samplers. A mess if old and new, cabboge and turnips, just bad.

  2. Speaking of sampler: Tomorrow i'm going to my friend Erwin where dozen of cds are waiting for me again and of course vice versa for him. His favorite music is sampler from old bands. I can provide him with plenty of supplies.

  3. Love label compilations and New Rose picked up where most Punk / New Wave labels either sold out to larger labels or went belly up. ...Great stuff.

  4. I love this kind of stuff, as I like a wide variety of genres (except Top-40, Country and Rap after 1989). It's like I put my personal collection on random play.

  5. Why not mp3 anymore ? Many of us would still appreciate it. Thanks for all you do. Regards

    1. MP3 need a lot of space and this means that MEGA uploader needs more money.

    2. It's very easy to convert Flac to MP3. Just search in Google: Flac to MP3 and you'll find the online program. It's free and takes only two minutes. Then, you can cancel the Flac file.

    3. Regarding mp3 I think its a far inferior medium to flac and would never be as arrogant as to say "many of us would still appreciate it". Speak for yourself in future.

    4. Hi res flac only. Mp3's sound horrible especially in open air listening, zero soung stage.

  6. Regarding mp3, I use dbpoweramp to convert from one format to another. You can download the flac, convert it down to mp3, and delete the flac if you're short on storage. It takes literally seconds. It even shows on my right click context menu, so its easy to get to.
Regarding this post, what a blast this box is!! So much was happening in this time frame. Some stuff I've heard but a lot is new to me. Perfect!
