The Peanut Butter Conspiracy: Discography

The Peanut Butter Conspiracy was an American, Los Angeles-based, Flower Power pop/rock group

from the 1960s. The band is known for lead singer Barbara Robison and for briefly having Spencer Dryden of Jefferson Airplane as a band member.
                                               

The band formed in Los Angeles in August 1966 from the folk rock group "The Ashes", which

included John Merrill (guitar/vocals), Barbara "Sandi" Robison (vocals), Alan Brackett (bass/vocals), Spencer Dryden (drums), and Jim Cherniss (guitar/vocals). The group had earlier been known as The Young Swingers, who released two obscure singles. The Ashes released a first single on the Vault label in February 1966, "Is There Anything I Can Do?", written by Jackie DeShannon.
                                                 

Adding drummer Jim Voigt as Dryden's replacement, the Ashes recorded a self-titled LP for the Vault

label before disbanding, with Merrill, Brackett, and Voight recruiting singer Sandi Robison and harpist/guitarist Lance Fent to form the Peanut Butter Conspiracy; after debuting on Vault with the single "Time Is After You," the band signed to major-label Columbia, where 1967's "It's a Happening Thing" heralded the spring release of their debut LP, the Gary Usher-produced The Peanut Butter Conspiracy Is Spreading.
                                   

Ex-Sound Machine guitarist Bill Wolff replaced Fent for the follow-up, The Great Conspiracy, which

like its predecessor failed to make much of a commercial impact; only Robison, Merrill, and Brackett remained for 1969's For Children of All Ages, which featured new keyboardist Ralph Shuckett and drummer Michael Stevens. Dryden left The Ashes (May 1966) to replace Skip Spence in Jefferson Airplane, Robison left (June 1966) to give birth, and the group temporarily disbanded.
                                     

Alan Brackett hooked up with a new guitarist, Lance Baker Fent, and a new drummer, Jim Voigt, naming the new trio "The Crossing Guards". Merrill and Robison rejoined and the five-piece band became The Peanut Butter Conspiracy.

The group signed with Columbia Records in late 1966, releasing a single "It's A Happening Thing" produced by Gary Usher. It reached number 93 on the national pop chart. The band's first album, The Peanut Butter Conspiracy Is Spreading, followed. It was also produced by Usher, who brought in studio musicians including Glen Campbell and James Burton to bolster the group's sound. The album charted at number 196 on the Billboard 200.
                                           

Their second single produced by Samuel Tarney ("She's My Girl") failed to chart. Their late 1967 single

"Turn On a Friend (to the Good Life)" also failed to chart. However, they toured nationally with a new guitarist, Bill Wolff, and recorded a second album for Columbia, The Great Conspiracy. The group recorded songs for movies, including Angels from Hell, Run Angel Run, Jud, Cherry Harry and Raquel, Hell Ride, 2000 Years Later, and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
                            

The Peanut Butter Conspiracy disbanded soon after, with Brackett pursuing studio work, Fent later collaborating with Randy Meisner, and Wolff joining Fusion.

FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES 1969

                                  

Alan Brackett is the guy singing lead on most of these cuts. He was the PBC's bassist and 1/2 of their in-house songwriting duo. The group was once signed to Columbia where they cut two great records with producer Gary Usher, which were subsequently compiled on the previously mentioned 2-fer. I won't go into details about those albums because you can read my review under the appropriate heading.

The PBC had previously excelled at psychedelic rock music, but times were changing. To compete in '69, you needed soul, baby, you needed to FEEL IT. Alan Brackett knew this, and he reassembled the PBC into a psudeo-R&B configuration, replacing lead guitarist Bill Wolf with former Clear Light keyboardist Ralph Shuckett (whose organ lines you previously heard drench the Monkees' "Porpoise Song" in shimmering glory) and bringing in Clear Light's drummer Michael Stevens as well.
                         

While Clear Light was a psychedelic band first and foremost, you can obviously tell the two new PBCers new how to "cook", as they used to say back then. The precise, sneaky fills from Shuckett's B-3, Brackett's melodic bass runs and rocksteady drumming anchors every track on this record. These

guys FEEL IT, baby. Throughout the album Alan Brackett howls with a mock-psuedo-soul inflection, coming across like a poor man's David Clayton Thomas. Like I said, listen to the sound clips. This is not a voice everybody can appreciate... No, that would be Barbara Robinson (or as we once referred to her high-ness, "Sandi Peanut Butter"). Barbra was the obvious star and focal point of the group. Her vocals are up front in the mix here, but regrettably she only gets to sing lead on a few of these tracks.
                                        

When she does get a lead, however, she certainly makes the most of it. "Return Home" may be perhaps the best female lead vocal in the rock genre I've ever heard in my life. The band plays tastefully and restrianed on that one, letting Barbara just belt. This is potent music, not for the faint of heart. "It's

Alright" is similarly gorgeous, a real sonic beauty and not the phony MIDI excrement you always hear nowadays.
This is the sound of a band that worked hard to put out good music. The fact that they possessed perhaps the best female rock vocalist of the 1960's will only add to the allure of this record over time (review by Jason Penick).

Dropkick Murphys are an American Celtic punk band formed in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1996. The band was initially signed to independent punk record label Hellcat Records, releasing five albums for the label, and building a reputation locally through constant touring and yearly St. Patrick's Day week

shows, held in and around Boston. The 2004 single "Tessie" became the band's first mainstream hit and one of their biggest charting singles to date. The band's final Hellcat release, 2005's The Warrior's Code, included the song "I'm Shipping Up to Boston"; the song was featured in the 2006 film The Departed, and went on to become the band's only platinum-selling single to date, and remains one of their best-known songs. The band is known for their loud, energetic live shows.
                                                                  

[Taking their musical cues from British Oi!, American hardcore, and traditional Irish music, Boston's Dropkick Murphys have built a reputation as one of America's most celebrated Celtic punk outfits. The group formed in the late 1990s as a fiery, though relatively straightforward punk outfit, but through the

years began incorporating traditional Irish folk instrumentation and melody into their unruly sound. With songs about working-class troubles, street-tough solidarity, and the joys to be found at the bottom of a bottle, the Murphys won over both traditional punk fans and mainstream revelers, particularly after their song "Shipping Off to Boston'' was featured in Martin Scorsese's 2006 Oscar-winning film The Departed.
                                              

In subsequent years, the band's audience increased significantly with albums like 2011's Going Out in

Style and 2017's 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory consistently charting in the Top Ten. Also active in charitable causes and politics, they founded the Claddagh Fund to supports community-based non-profits and have essentially become regional heroes in their hometown. Twenty-five years into their career the Murphys delivered their tenth studio album, Turn Up That Dial, in 2021.
                                                   

Dropkick Murphys formed in South Boston in 1996; vocalist Mike McColgan, guitarist Rick Barton, and bassist Ken Casey comprised the original nucleus of the group, with a series of drummers passing

through the lineup before the addition of mainstay Matt Kelly in 1997. After a series of EPs, including Fire & Brimstone, Tattoos & Scally Caps, and Boys on the Docks, the Murphys signed to Hellcat Records to issue their 1998 full-length Do or Die, produced by Rancid's Lars Frederiksen. McColgan exited the group soon after (he later went on to form the like-minded Street Dogs) and was replaced by vocalist Al Barr for the follow-up, 1999's The Gang's All Here.
                                           

Mob Mentality, a split release with the Business, appeared in mid-2000, at the same time the band was going through an extensive redesign. Their five-piece arrangement expanded into a septet, as Marc

Orrell stepped in after original guitarist Rick Barton left the band to get married. James Lynch joined as guitarist, with bagpiper Spicy McHaggis and mandolinist Ryan Foltz also coming aboard to enhance the band's increasingly Celtic-driven sound. For their third studio effort, 2001's Sing Loud, Sing Proud, bassist Ken Casey took over production duties, and the album featured collaborations with ex-Pogue Shane MacGowan and Cock Sparrer's Colin McFaull.
                                             

Their Irish pride shone through the next year, when Live on St. Patrick's Day from Boston, MA was

released in the summer. Recorded at the biggest Irish-American celebration of the year in a town known for its widespread Irish heritage, the set was a blistering example of their intense and lively gigs. As the band prepped for the annual Vans Warped Tour in summer 2003, they released Blackout in June; the album featured new bagpipe player Scruffy Wallace and accordionist Tim Brennan (who further took over mandolin and tin whistle after Foltz left following some touring).
                                             

The Murphys reworked the Boston Red Sox anthem "Tessie" on their mid-2004 EP Tessie, which subsequently became the theme song to the Sox's World Series run that year and was featured in the movie Fever Pitch. Warrior's Code followed in 2005, and one of its songs, "I'm Shipping Up to Boston,"

was later used in the 2006 Martin Scorsese film The Departed, become their biggest hit. Soon after, the Murphys recorded The Meanest of Times, a collection of songs about family loyalty, featured guest appearances by Spider Stacy of the Pogues and Ronnie Drew of the Dubliners, and was released in mid-September 2007. With the 2008 departure of lead guitarist Orrell, the group welcome multi-instrumentalist Jeff DaRosa into the fold and promoted Brennan to lead guitar.
                                                              

Live on Lansdowne, Boston MA, a CD/DVD of tracks culled from the week of St. Patrick's Day shows in Boston in 2009, was released in 2010. For their next studio effort, the band looked inward to create a concept album, combining their own experiences to create the fictional character Cornelius Larkin. The

result was their seventh album, Going Out in Style, which was released in 2011 on their Born & Bred label. 2012 saw the band follow up with Live at Fenway before returning the next year with their eighth studio effort, Signed and Sealed in Blood. The Murphys returned in early 2017 with their ninth studio effort, 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory. The album was their first to be recorded outside of Massachusetts, with the band relocating to El Paso, Texas for the entire creative process.
                                        

Inspired by the group’s work with the Claddagh Fund for recovering addicts, it was released once again through their own imprint, Born & Bred Records. Upon release, 11 Short Stories debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200. Following its release, the band headed out on an extensive world tour, including dates with Rancid in North America. Recording started on their tenth album in 2018, with a

handful of tracks released in the interim, and by 2020, with COVID-19 putting tours on hold, the group focused on finishing the release. On it the band opted to move away from the enraged content of their previous albums, instead writing uplifting, singalong, feel-good anthems along with an ode to Barr's father and the numerous people lost to COVID-19. The resulting album, Turn Up That Dial, was issued at the beginning of 2021.

The Kingsmen: The Kingsmen Story

 

The Kingsmen are a 1960s garage rock band from Portland, Oregon, United States. They were the most successful and influential rock and roll band Oregon has produced. The band’s recording of "Louie Louie" was a nationwide hit in 1964, and it has remained one of the most popular rock songs of all time. 

The band got its start in Portland in 1959 when two teenaged friends, drummer Lynn Easton and guitarist Jack Ely, started playing popular music together. By 1960, Mike Mitchell, on lead guitar, and Bob Nordby, on bass, had joined the band. Ken Chase, a local Top 40 radio personality and the owner of the Chase, a teen dance club in Milwaukie, OR, took the group under his wing, and the Kingsmen became the club’s house band in 1961. Don Gallucci joined the group on keyboards in 1962.
                                        

"Louie Louie," an R&B calypso tune about a homesick sailor, was written and recorded by Los

Angeles singer Richard Berry in 1956 and became a short-lived regional hit in California. Composer Berry sold the rights to his famous song for $750 in 1959. The song was rediscovered a few years later by bands in the Seattle area. Rockin' Robin Roberts and the Wailers recorded it, and it became a regional hit in the Northwest in 1961. It was that version that became one of the most popular tunes in the Kingsmen's repertoire.
                                        

On April 6, 1963, Ken Chase met the band at a Portland recording studio to cut "Louie Louie" as its first single record. He called the recording good after the second take. The song featured vocalist

Jack Ely shouting into a boom microphone suspended above his head. A thousand copies were released on the Jerden label out of Seattle. While the tune got some airplay in the Northwest, it did not become a hit until October, when an influential Boston disc jockey, Arnie "Woo Woo" Ginsberg, featured it as his "Worst Record of the Week". Many listeners loved the record, and when it was released again on the Wand label, the record began to climb the Billboard charts, primarily because of sales in the Northeast.
                                          

Meanwhile, in August 1963, the Kingsmen disbanded. Ely and Nordby quit the group over differences

with Easton, who had to reconstitute the band when "Louie Louie" began gaining popularity. After several changes of personnel, the new band included Dick Peterson on drums, Norm Sundholm on bass, and Barry Curtis on keyboards. Easton replaced Ely as lead vocalist. The William Morris Agency took over management, and the Kingsmen recorded their first album and began extensive touring.
                                         

By December 14, "Louie Louie" had reached number two on the Billboard charts, where it

stayed for six weeks, but the obscurity [and unintelligible lyrics] of Ely's vocal performance was causing controversy. In January, a constituent complained to Indiana Governor Matthew Welsh that an obscene record was getting radio airplay in the state. Welsh and his staff agreed that the lyrics were "pornographic," and he asked the Indiana Broadcasters Association to ban the record.
                                     

The FBI launched an investigation to determine if "Louie Louie" violated the federal law prohibiting interstate transportation of obscene materials. After two and a half years, the FBI

concluded that it could not determine if the lyrics were obscene because they were unintelligible. In the meantime, versions of the imaginary lyrics were circulating in high schools and college campuses all over the United States, helping to push the popularity of the Kingsmen to new heights.
                                      

The Kingsmen continued to tour and make national television appearances. They had another top-ten

hit with "The Jolly Green Giant" in 1965, but their popularity had faded by the end of 1967 as musical tastes changed. The group once again disbanded. Since the 1970s, original member Mike Mitchell along with Dick Peterson and Barry Curtis have continued to perform as the Kingsmen with other musicians. Jack Ely died in 2015.
                                     

"Louie Louie" experienced a revival when it was featured in the movie Animal House in 1978. The

song has been recorded by hundreds of performers and is widely acknowledged as one of the most important records in rock and roll history. "Louie Louie" was recorded in one take [some say two takes] for a one hour session that cost $36.
                                         

SUNDAZED RECORDS (INFO. HERE)

                                          

Sundazed Music is an American independent record label based in Coxsackie, New York. It specializes in obscure and rare recordings from the 1950s to the 1970s. In 2000, Sundazed had a staff of 15 and two mixing studios, including a vintage audio equipment collection. Label founders Bob Irwin and his wife Mary started the label in 1989. Irwin's skill at restoring old vinyl records for the (then new) CD format, attracted the attention of major labels, who increasingly solicited him to help them re-issue material from their back catalogs. He helped Sony Music release their archival Legacy Records label. Later, his restoration work included early material by the likes of Bob Dylan, Nancy Sinatra, and the Byrds. Irwin also worked at Arista for a time.
