South Of No North: Fell Frozen 1986

 

South Of No North was one of the first true darkwave bands to emerge in Greece. South of No North,

from the densely populated districts of northern Athens that were home to most of the country's post-punk scene, were one of the first significant bands to form within the nascent dark wave and goth scene in Greece. Taking their name from the title of Charles Bukowski's 1973 book, they began playing local clubs shortly after their formation, first appearing on stage as South of No North in March 1984.
      

They signed to pioneering local label Creep records and recorded "Lacrimae Christi" in September 1984. The album showed clear influences of contemporary British bands such as Japan, Echo & The Bunnymen, Clock DVA, and, above, all, Bauhaus. Both lyrics and music were a collaborative effort with no single composer dominating the songwriting process though the lyrics, for practical reasons, gradually became the singer's domain.
                         

Their debut album Lacrimae Christ featured the classic 10.000 Eyes.
Took their name from a Charles Bukowski's book title.
On 23/3/1984 they performed live for their first time at Σχολικό Συγκρότημα Γκράβας (Athens), along with 'Στρυχνίνες', 'Ghetto', 'Cpt Neφos', 'Metro Decay', 'Art Of Parties', 'Yell-O-Yell' & 'Villa 21'.
On 16/3/1985 they performed live at Πήγασος Club (Athens), along with 'Villa 21'.
On 13/3/1987 they performed live at Muswell's Pub (Athens).
On 17/9/1987 they performed live at Club 17 (Kiato, Korinthos), along with 'Συμμορία'.
                                  

Creep Records also released their second album "Fell Frozen" in 1986 being one of its last releases, ending the company's five-year active presence.

Following the second album a pair of keyboard players was added to the line-up and two more full-length albums followed on Wipe Out, Greece's largest indie label of the day. The band maintained a steady following, mostly in Athens itself, but never broke out internationally despite their local popularity as a live act and a number of demo tapes sent abroad. Songs from the band's first two albums, particularly "10.000 Eyes" and their musical rendition of Poe's "Annabel Lee," continued to feature on local club playlists for the next two decades, and their influence was a given for most bands that developed within the scene in the late 1980s and 1990s.
                                                              
The band went on hiatus early in 1993, shortly after the release of "Rajah". Though it was generally thought that they had split up, the band never formally disbanded and maintain that they kept writing songs even after they ceased being an active group. They reunited in 2003 for the local Elfentanz 2

music festival with two changes in the line-up: Andreas Grigoriadis, who had abandoned music altogether, was replaced by his brother, Daniel, and the band became a septet with the addition of a second guitarist. The reunion gig was followed by a re-release of their first album about a year later, and promises of further releases of old and new material were made.
                                             

Από τα πλέον κλασικά darkwave συγκροτήματα, οι South Of No North σχηματίστηκαν τον Νοέμβριο του 1983. Πυρήνας ήταν ο Μιχάλης Κράλλης στη κιθάρα και ο Γιώργος Κουλούρης στο μπάσο, που

τότε έπαιζαν στους PsychoMafia, μαζί με τους Φοίβο Περιγιαλιώτη, από τους Ex-Humans, στα τύμπανα, και Ανδρέα Γρηγοριάδη στη φωνή. Κύριες επιρροές τους στάθηκαν συγκροτήματα όπως Bauhaus, Joy Division, Echo & the Bunnymen, Cure, Sound, Clock DVA και πολύ περισσότερο Dave Sylvian και Japan. Την πρώτη τους συναυλία έδωσαν στο Λύκειο της Γκράβας τον Μάρτιο του 1984.
                        

Πολύ σύντομα, ήρθαν σε επαφή με την Creep Records και μπήκανε στο studio τον Σεπτέμβριο του 1984 για να ηχογραφήσουν το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ. Το ντεμπούτο τους "Lacrimae Christi", κυκλοφόρησε τον Απρίλιο του 1985. Επηρεασμένο από το γοτθικό κλίμα που επικρατούσε τότε στην ελληνική σκηνή. Ξεχώριζαν οι συνθέσεις "10.000 Eyes", "Suddenly" και "Another Dead Day".
                                                  

Το 1986 θα κυκλοφορήσει ο δεύτερος δίσκος του γκρουπ "South Of No North" με τίτλο "Fell Frozen",

από την "Creep Records". Ο δίσκος περιέχει επτά συνθέσεις της μπάντας. Οι στίχοι του τραγουδιού "Anabelle Lee" είναι βασισμένοι στο ομότιτλο ποίημα του Edgar Alan Poe. Ξεχωρίζουν τα τραγούδια ''Fell Frozen'' και ''Annabelle Lee''. Πρόκειται για έναν εναλλακτικό ροκ δίσκο με dark wave στοιχεία. Ο δίσκος ''Fell Frozen'' σχεδόν 25 χρόνια αργότερα συμπεριλήφθηκε στους 20 καλύτερους δίσκους των '80s στην ειδική έκδοση του Sonik με τίτλο ''Μισός Αιώνας Ελληνικό Ροκ - Από τα '60s στα '00s''.
                                      

Λίγο καιρό μετά την κυκλοφορία του δίσκου θα έρθει το κλείσιμο της "Creep Records" και ο δίσκος ''Fell Frozen'' ήταν ο τελευταίος που κυκλοφόρησε από αυτή την ιστορική πλέον εταιρεία. Το ομώνυμο άλμπουμ τους "South Of No North" κυκλοφόρησε το 1989 από την εταιρεία Wipe Out και θεωρείται το καλύτερο τους. Τον δίσκο ανοίγει το γοητευτικό και λυρικό "Sha La La" ένα από τα πιο γνωστά τους τραγούδια. Το Μάιο 1989 άνοιξαν την συναυλία των Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds στο κλαμπ Ρόδον. Το άλμπουμ "Rajah" του 1992, περιείχε τελευταίες ηχογραφήσεις αλλά και παλιότερα ακυκλοφόρητα τραγούδια.
                                         

Δεκατρία ολόκληρα χρόνια μετά την τελευταία τους συναυλία και με αφορμή το δεύτερο Elfentanz Festival, οι South Of No North έδωσαν ένα μοναδικό reunion show στις 27 Σεπτεμβρίου του 2003 στο κλαμπ Gagarin 205. Στα φωνητικά αντί για τον Ανδρέα Γρηγοριάδη στάθηκε ο μικρότερος αδελφός του, Δανιήλ.

To 2016 θα δημιουργηθεί το συγκρότημα ''Overalt?'' από δυο από τα ιδρυτικά μέλη του συγκροτήματος ''South Of No North''. Πρόκειται για τον Γιώργο Κουλούρη στο μπάσο και τον Φοίβο Περγαλιώτη στα τύμπανα. Επίσης οι δύο τους είναι μέλη του ροκ συγκροτήματος ''Dreamline'' το οποίο έχει κυκλοφορήσει τρεις δίσκους μέχρι και σήμερα. Η μπάντα ''Overalt?'' έπαιξε live παρουσιάζοντας τραγούδια των South Of No North το Δεκέμβριο του 2016 στην Death Disco.
