Srereolab: Oscillons From The Anti-Sun (3 CD Box) 2005

Stereolab are an Anglo-French avant-pop band formed in London in 1990. Led by the songwriting team of Tim Gane and Lætitia Sadier, the group's music combines influences from krautrock, lounge and 1960s pop music, often incorporating a repetitive motorik beat with heavy use of vintage electronic

keyboards and female vocals sung in English and French. Their lyrics have political and philosophical themes influenced by the Surrealist and Situationist movements. On stage, they play in a more feedback-driven and guitar-oriented style. The band also draw from funk, jazz and Brazilian music, and were one of the first artists to be dubbed "post-rock". They are regarded among the most innovative and influential groups of the 1990s.

Stereolab were formed by Gane (guitar and keyboards) and Sadier (vocals, keyboards and guitar) after

the break-up of McCarthy. The two were romantically involved for fourteen years and are the group's only consistent members. Other longtime members include 1992 addition Mary Hansen (backing vocals, keyboards and guitar), who died in 2002, and 1993 addition Andy Ramsay (drums). The High Llamas' leader Sean O'Hagan (guitar and keyboards) was a member from 1993 to 1994 and continued appearing on later records for occasional guest appearances.

Although Stereolab found success in the underground music scene and were influential enough to spark

a renewed interest in older analogue instruments, they have never had a significant commercial impact. The band were released from their recording contract with Elektra Records due to poor record sales, and their self-owned label Duophonic signed a distribution deal with Too Pure and later Warp Records. After a ten-year hiatus, the band reunited for live performances in 2019.

With their hypnotic rhythms and mesmerizing singsong vocals, Stereolab was one of the most influential and distinctive bands to emerge in the '90s. Led by Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier, the group celebrated forms of music that were on the fringe of rock and brought attention to strands of pop music,

bossa nova, lounge-pop, movie soundtracks, that were traditionally banished from the rock lineage. On early singles and albums such as 1993's Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements, Stereolab combined '60s pop melodies with an art rock aesthetic borrowed from Krautrock bands like Faust and Neu!, but by the time of 1996's Emperor Tomato Ketchup, their sound incorporated jazz, hip-hop, and dance.

Later, their collaborations with John McEntire and Jim O'Rourke on 1997's Dots and Loops and 2001's Sound-Dust reflected an increasingly intricate, experimental approach. Following the tragic 2002 death

of member Mary Hansen, the band returned to a poppier style for albums like 2008's Chemical Chords. Stereolab's unmistakable sound had a lasting impact: During the '90s, indie contemporaries like Pavement and Blur aped their style, while hip-hop artists such as J Dilla and Tyler the Creator sampled the band's music or collaborated with its members in the 2000s and 2010s.

Oscillons from the Anti-Sun, released in April 2005, is a three-CD, one-DVD box-set collection of

Stereolab tracks culled from eight of the group's EPs (Jenny Ondioline, Ping Pong, Wow and Flutter, Fluorescences, Cybele's Reverie, Miss Modular, The Free Design and Captain Easychord) and singles.
It includes both released and unreleased tracks, which are not presented in chronological order.

  1. Aaaahhh, super Kostas !
    Again something very unusual.
I once read something about her first "peng" but then forgot it.
I wasn't sure if they were good either.
If you recommend it, i don't have to hesitate any longer.
    Thank you !!

    1. What can I say? They don't have a stable music style. I saw them, years ago, in 15 June 2006 at Technopolis - Athens. They were great in concert.

  2. Dots and Loops is a criminally underrated 90's album and probably their magnum opus.
It seemed like the loss of the singer really set them back in sound.
Elektra was a very good "commercial" label and if the masses knew good music Judee Sill and Stereolab would be household names.
