Slant 6: Soda Pop * Rip Off 1994 + Inzombia 1995

Taking their name from a Dodge engine, Slant 6 emerged on the Washington DC scene in the summer

of 1992. Slant 6 consisted of Christina Billotte (electric guitar and vocals), Myra Power (electric bass guitar and vocals), and Marge Marshall (drum set and trumpet). The group formed in July 1992 following the 1991 breakup of Autoclave, in which Billotte had played. The group took their name from an in-line six-cylinder engine produced in the 1960s through the 1980s by the Chrysler Corporation.

They went into the studio and produced a three song single for Dischord in 1993, and toured the U.S.

for much of that year. Their first album, "Soda Pop Rip Off", was recorded in Washington DC, and was produced by longtime Dischord mainstay Don Zientaraand Fugazi guitarist Ian MacKaye. Evelyn McDonnell and Elisabeth Vincentelli, writing for the New York Times in 2019, considered Soda Pop * Rip Off "arguably the best album of the riot grrrl era." Rob Sheffield, writing for Rolling Stone in 2020, considered Soda Pop * Rip Off an essential LP of the nineties.

A second album, Inzombia, and a split 7- inch single were released in 1995. The band made an

appearance in the 1994 cult road movie Half-cocked. Slant 6 broke up in November 1995 while on tour in England. After breaking up in 1995, Myra Power played with Tarot Bolero, and Marge Marshall started her own fashion line, called Babyteeth.

SLANT 6 - SODA POP * RIP OFF 1994

The band's sound is both innovative and exciting, combining new-wave punk, D.C. hardcore, and

almost creepily frantic guitar work into an energizing rush of sound that resembles more well-known groups like Sleater-Kinney and Bikini Kill. In all, Soda Pop Rip Off works almost like a retrospective of a period in the band's career, collecting major work (including great tracks like "Double Edged Knife" and "What Kind of Monster Are You?") -- those looking for a more album-oriented release should look to Inzombia.

SLANT 6 - INZOMBIA 1995

Inzombia takes Slant 6's trademark style -- fierce guitar work somewhere between new wave

bubblepunk and the lighter side of D.C. hardcore -- and gives it a chance to work as an album (Soda Pop Rip Off, the band's other full release, is more of a collection of separate recordings). Given this, and the album's horror B-movie theme, it ends up with far more texture and depth than the band's more single-oriented work, and this is definitely a good thing for them.
